Increase Traffic with an On-Topic Ezine

Start a newsletter make it "on topic" for your site, but try to make it viral as well. Keys here are twofold: on topic-focused and viral.

Too many people send out regular ezines that are blatant sales pitches for their products and services. Nobody likes that type of content to read, let alone share with friends.

Take a look at popular magazines and online newsletters you do like to read. Which areas attract your interest? Short news clips about your niche or industry are popular. So are quotes from famous people in the field.

Other tips to help increase your readership and hence site traffic with your ezine are:

- Make your subject line powerful so that it does not get filtered out in people’s email systems. You can do this several ways. First, have a part of the subject that remains the same so that your readers recognize it when it arrives. Add some type of issue number if you’d like. Send the issues on the same day each week. And add a specific, targeted line of message in the subject focusing on a topic that peaks interest. An example might be, “The Tuesday SEO Report, Vol. III Issue A Double Your Traffic in 33 Days!”

- Keep a folder going on your PC and / or in print of hot topics and articles. Save these for reference when you need to get content together for your own ezine. You can also ask the authors for permission to publish these. Plus take the next step and ask for permission to follow up and interview the authors so that you can write a follow-up piece yourself. Or record the interview and add an audio link to your ezine, inviting readers to share with others for a viral effect.

- Experiment with HTML and text versions of your ezine. If possible, offer both versions, as some people have slower Internet access connections than others, resulting in slower downloading of your ezine if it’s in HTML. However, HTML allows for full-color graphics, digital photos and much more attractive ways to sell your products. However, passing along a viral HTML can get messy, as people pass it along via text from time to time. So try to keep viral info link-oriented, and not visual, i.e. based upon a photo in a floating ezine, for instance.

Regardless of how you set up your ezine, remember to have it focused. And tell people what to do - -invite them to pass it along to others!
