Weave Your Internal Linking

To get more website visitors to your site, you need to set up the internal linking structure in order to maximize the page rank of your home page. In short, you need to make sure all pages are linked. And in order to weave your internal linking so that it’s optimized; i.e. working at its best for you, here are two major tools you can use below.

Xenu's Link Sleuth

A computer program written by Tilman Hausherr called Link Sleuth is a free spidering software download for your computer with Microsoft Windows that can check websites for broken hyperlinks.

Basically what Link Sleuth does is check your site’s internal links that are within <a> tags, also plug-ins, images, backgrounds, frames, style sheets, local image maps, scripts and Java applets. Then the software spiders the output links to the other pages, verifying that they work.

The software has an easy-to-use interface, interacts with SSL pages and gives easily viewable reports, even with long URLs. An entire site can be checked in minutes. http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html

Build Your Internal Links

If you have a site that has more than a few pages and folders, you know what a pain it is to keep your link structure set up. There's a free program, dirhtml, that automatically builds index pages for your entire site in seconds. Plus it has a lot of flexibility in what you can display in the index pages. I've used it for a number of sites and think it's a great tool, especially when it's free! Here's one link to the program

Site Map

You also need a good site map (aka sitemap) to alert search engines to your pages and to bring in more traffic. A site map is a page on our website that lists all of the pages in your site, like a table of contents for readers, classifying them in order. This site map has a dual purpose; (1) to help direct visitors so they can click around your site in an efficient manner and (2) to help search engine robots navigate your web pages.

An important technological feature of a site map is that it can help search engine robots find pages that lack HTML links. For example, sites with JavaScript or Macromedia Flash menus would benefit here. Simply type “free site map” into your favorite search engine for a free download and instructions on how to set up your own site map; Google site map is a popular choice.

Note that site maps are not the end-all solution, though. Most search engine robots spend only a limited length of time spidering a limited number of page links. So sites with a large number of links may need additional search engine optimization techniques and strategies aside from the site map to help direct search engines.
